Value from demand – Finland

The focus of CS4 is on forest management and wood flow strategies and policy for cost-competitive and resilient sustainable wood supply, and adjustments to meet future alternative demand scenarios for forest products. Outputs will include a value-chain Decision Support System (DSS) for assessing long-term trends for forest policy & increasing competition for sustainable wood supply, as well as methods and guidelines for more resilient value chains on cost-competitiveness, wood supply security, sustainability and adjustments to meet future alternative demand in Finland. Case study location: Private forest in South-Central Finland.

To accomplish this the team will work on:

• examine the effects of alternative demands for forest products in future regional value. The focus will be on adjusting the supply of raw wood to meet alternative demand scenarios for forest products;
• examine: forest management strategies (optimisation) that secure the balance between demand for and supply of raw wood and provide incentives to private forest owners to supply raw wood – meeting the goals for climate change mitigation and resilience at the same time;
• examine: changes over time in forest management due to optimisation;
• examine: the impact of tree breeding (genetic gains) on optimal forest management strategies;
• develop improved Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (E-LCA) biodiversity impact modelling
